Full Plot

In the dark silence of the sea during World War II, the submarine U.S.S. Tiger Shark prowls on what should be a routine rescue mission. But for the shell-shocked crew, trapped together in the sub's narrow corridors and constricted spaces, this is about to become a journey into the sensory delusions, mental deceptions and runaway fear that lurk just below the surface of the ocean and deep inside the human psyche. Stumbo: Hoag, are you pushing him up or feeling him up? Hoag: I've got a dead kraut dick in my face and you're complainin'? Come on Stumbo! Hoag: Three redcoats... and guess what? One of 'ems a bleeder! Hoag: Best lookin' bad luck I ever saw. Lt. Loomis: Grow some dicks and shut up! Lt. Loomis: Sorry about what? Brice: Uh... she was... asking about Winters. Lt. Loomis: What'd you tell her? Brice: The story. Brice: Try not to fraternize with the men. They can be a little... strange. Claire: Strange, as in superstitious? Brice: As in "strange." Brice: Mister Loomis, where's our crew? Lt. Loomis: Maybe we're spending more time watching that broad than watching our backs. Lt. Loomis: It used to feel like a big ocean, didn't it? Hoag: What if, when we took on that kraut ship, we didn't sink 'em? What if... they sunk us? Wallace: Oh, that's a good twist. Brice: I feeling better much now Brice: [snaps] You're not skipper of this ship. Odell: [snaps back] And neither are you, sir. Brice: Now I realize why he didn't kill me too. He didn't have to. [first lines] Brice: [hands coordinates to Loomis] Lt. Loomis: This is almost a day behind us, sir. Lt. Loomis: Well who are they? Americans, Brits, Italians? It doesn't even say. Brice: Well I think we can assume they're friendly, Mr. Loomis. Besides, it doesn't appear to be a suggestion, does it. [last lines] Claire: You say whatever you have to say, Ensign. I'll always believe you were brought back here for a reason.

- 'Darren Aronofsky' (qv), who co-wrote the screenplay, was originally going to direct the film in 1999 but instead made _Requiem for a Dream (2000)_ (qv).

- Originally 'Frank Sinatra' (qv) singing "I'll Be Seeing You" was supposed to be mysteriously playing on the record player. When the studio had difficulties obtaining the rights, the song was replaced by 'Benny Goodman''s "Sing Sing Sing (With a Swing)".

- 'Holt McCallany' (qv) learned how to do several yo-yo tricks for his character Loomis. Some of the tricks he performs in the film are the Brain Twister, Around the World, and Walk the Dog. His instructor, 'Brian Cabildo' (qv), is listed in the final credits.

- Some filming for this movie took place on an actual WW2 submarine. The USS Silversides (which is available for tours) located in Muskegon Michigan was towed out into the middle of Lake Michigan where scenes with 'Bruce Greenwood (I)' (qv) were filmed. The Silversides had some minor re-painting done (rust coloration), but is now back to her original gray color. The rest of the sets and models used in this movie were all based on the look and layout of the Silversides.
