Full Plot

Two London brothers are hard-up for cash, and both have girls to look out for, too. When rich Uncle Howard comes to town and agrees to help them out, he admits his finances are under investigation, and he asks them to do him a favor and "take care of" an old business relation to keep his trouble under wraps - he says that they're family, and since he always takes care of them, the least they could do is help him out this once, as they're the only ones he can trust. The film follows their struggle with the immorality of this request and how each brother chooses to deal with it. Anonymous In London, the loser brothers from a working-class family, Ian and Terry, buy a second-hand sailboat name Cassandra's Dream for their leisure. Ian poses of big shot and has big dreams, saving money to invest in two hotels in California while the unstable Terry is an alcoholic gambler addicted in pills and mechanic. When Terry loses a great amount in a card game, Ian lends his savings to pay part of the sum Terry owes to loan sharks. When their wealthy uncle Howard arrives in London coming from China, the brothers see the chance to borrow the money they need to quit the debt with the loan sharks and to invest in the hotel. However, Howard asks them to get rid of his former associated Martin Burns that is threatening him and his businesses. Ian and Terry have to decide whether they shall cross the line and help family or face the lack the money to resolve their issues. Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Plot not found

Quotes

Ian: Would you sleep with a director to get a part? Angela: Well, that depends on the part, and who the director is, and how much I'd had to drink. Ian: It's not a very comforting answer. Angela: I didn't like the question. Howard: After all I've done for you, it should be automatic. Family is family! Blood is blood! You don't ask questions. You protect your own. [first lines] Ian: Ah, she's a beauty! I mean, look her - she's not new, but she looks new. He said the engine needed work. Terry: I could do the engine. Ian: I can't believe he's asking so little. It's practically a steal. Terry: John Anderson said we could keep it at his marina - free of charge - at least for a year till his son comes back. Ian: Ah, here he comes. Don't show you're too eager or he won't budge on the price, all right? Terry: Right. [last lines] Kate: Aw... I like that. What do you think? Angela: Yeah. Kate: I would look good in that. Angela: Yeah, Terry would love that. Kate: Would he? Angela: Yeah, men love that sort of shape. I wore something similar when Ian first saw me. Father: Like the poet said: "The only ship certain to come in has black sails." Ian: He was right about one thing. Once you cross the line, there's no going back.

Trivia

- 'Colin Farrell (I)' (qv) said in an interview that he "think[s] [he] did as many takes for this whole film as I did for one scene in _Miami Vice (2006)_ (qv)."

- This is the first 'Woody Allen' (qv) film to be released with a stereo soundtrack.

- Unusually for a 'Woody Allen' (qv) film, the music is provided by a composer - in this case, 'Philip Glass' (qv) - instead of being a collection of old standards.

- The third consecutive 'Woody Allen' (qv) film to be made in the UK (after _Match Point (2005)_ (qv) and _Scoop (2006)_ (qv)), and the first one not to have any Americans in the cast.

- Originally this was scheduled to open in late 2007 to qualify for Academy Award consideration. After some indifferent previews however, it was given a January 2008 release, traditionally the dumping ground for bad films.

- When 'Woody Allen' (qv) first approached 'Philip Glass' (qv) about doing the film's score, they had an initial meeting in which Glass played him a particularly ominous piece of music. Allen remarked that it was a very heavy section of music and that it would be perfect for establishing the dark mood of the film. Glass interjected with the fact that the music he'd
