Anna Barton: Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive. Anna Barton: What would you win by leaving Ingrid? Dr. Stephen Fleming: You. I'd win you. Anna Barton: Then you'd win something you already have. Elizabeth Prideaux: You must understand, this is a wonderful chance for Anna to get a fresh start in life. Dr. Stephen Fleming: I'm not sure I know what you mean. Elizabeth Prideaux: Yes you do. I watched you at lunch. You didn't dare to look at her. Dr. Stephen Fleming: All through dinner, I had one thought, one desire. To touch you. To hold you. Ingrid Fleming: She worries me. Dr. Stephen Fleming: I want you. Anna Barton: I know. Ingrid Fleming: [screaming, devastated] GIVE *ME* MY SON! Anna Barton: Fuck me. Dr. Stephen Fleming: It takes a remarkably short time to withdraw from the world. I traveled... until I arrived at a life of my own. What really makes us is beyond grasping. It's way beyond knowing. We give in to love... because it gives us some sense of what is unknowable. Nothing else matters, not at the end. Dr. Stephen Fleming: I saw her once more only. I saw her by accident at an airport, changing planes. She didn't see me. She was with Peter. She was holding a child. She was no different from anyone else. Dr. Stephen Fleming: [Martyn has fallen to his death, Stephen arrives home to find Ingrid in the kitchen with a bloody and bruised face] What happened? Ingrid Fleming: The pain was unbearable. I was beating myself. Ingrid Fleming: [the day after Martyn's death - to Stephen] What a pity we ever met. Ingrid Fleming: Why didn't you kill yourself? You should have killed yourself when it started, then I would have mourned you. It would have been difficult but I would have buried you. And I WOULD have wept. You are not an evil man. You should have killed yourself. Elizabeth Prideaux: You know where she is. She must have told you the story. She has gone to Peter.
