Quotes

Kratos: [strides out of his ship] Ten years, Athena! I have faithfully served the gods for ten years! When will you leave me of these nightmares? Athena: We have one final task of you, Kratos. Your greatest challenge awaits in Athens; where even now, my brother: Ares, lays siege, as we speak. Athens is on the verge of destruction. It is the will of Ares my great city fall. Zues has forbidden the gods from waging war on each other. That is why it must be you, Kratos. Only a mortal trained by a god has a chance at defeating Ares. Kratos: And if I am able to do this; to kill a god, then the visions: they will end? Athena: Complete this final task, and the past that consumes you will be forgiven. Have faith, Kratos, the gods do not forget those who come to their aid. Narrator: Leaving the rotting carcass of the hydra behind, Kratos set sail once more. His greatest challenge, and freedom from his growing madness lay before him, in the ancient city, of Athens. [Kratos saves the boat captain from falling down into the dead Hydra's stomach] Boat Captain: Thank the gods you came back for me! Kratos: I didn't come back for you! [Kratos takes the key from the captain's necklace and throws him down Hydra's throat] Kratos: God of war. I haven't forgotten you. For what you did that night, this city will be your grave... Kratos: By the gods, what have I become? Narrator: For Kratos, victory was worth everything. Even his soul. Kratos: [to Ares] The monster you created has returned... to kill you! Kratos: [opening lines] The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me, now there is no hope! Narrator: And Kratos cast himself from the highest mountain in all of Greece. After ten years of suffering, ten years of endless nightmares, it would finally come to an end, death, would be his escape from madness. But it had not always been this way, Kratos had once been a champion of the Gods... Kratos: [Kratos is facing a group of undead soldiers] Mangy beasts! I shall send you BACK to the depths of Hades! Ares: That night... I was trying to make you a great warrior! Kratos: ...You succeeded.

Trivia

- Kratos went through numerous different incarnations of armor, however the designers felt that the more armor was stripped of him the more brutal he ultimately became.

- The armor that Kratos wears in the rendered CGI cut-scenes were actually intended to be Kratos's armor through the game. However the PS2 lacked the power needed to make the armor look realistic enough on Kratos in-game and was cut.

- One of the first scenes showed to the press involved what was intended to be a part of Pandora's temple where Kratos has to stay on a magic elevator through an outdoor environment while a roaring sandstorm prepares to hit. The game play mechanics were finished, and the level was almost entirely completed but the sandstorm effects just turned out to be impossible and the whole sequence ended up cut.

- The Gorgons were originally designed with feet, but it was found to be impossible to animate all the portions of a Gorgon at once on the PS2 and the feet were cut.

- WILHELM SCREAM: The Athenian soldier guarding the bridge switch at the end of the Rooftops of Athens section of the game who is killed by Kratos.

- Contrary to the description on the ESRB, there is actually no
