Full Plot

Jamie Shannon is a soldier of fortune -- a mercenary who will stage a coup or a revolution for the right price. He is hired by British mining interests to scout out Zangaro, a small African nation with rich mineral deposits but a brutal and xenophobic dictatorship. Arrested soon after his arrival, Shannon is imprisoned as a spy, badly beaten, and tortured. While in prison he meets one of the country's leading intellectuals, Dr. Okoye, also imprisoned by the regime. Eventually released, he returns to London and is subsequently offered to opportunity to secretly invade Zangaro's capital and lead a military coup. Shannon accepts, but quietly has his own agenda to pursue. garykmcd An American mercenary executes a coup in a small African country designed to bring to power another dictator friendlier to a British multinational company. Not a remake of _The Wild Geese_ but another and more faithful adaptation of the novel 'The Dogs of War'. Keith Loh Plot not found

Michel: [raising his glass in a toast] Vive la mort ! Vive la guerre ! Vive le sacr mercenaire ! Shannon: [to the other mercenaries] Remember; you have to make it home to get paid. Shannon: In my jungle, you'd be just another asshole. Shannon: Shannon says something doubting the effectiveness of Col Bobi's troops Col. Bobi: If there is one who does not fight, Ill take his head and mount it on the palace gates Shannon: You and your brother in law have the same easygoing way of doing buisness Col. Bobi: Olou Kimba does not do buisness. So Sec Bobi will be president. He wants to be God... I want to be RICH! Drew: [the mercenaries are caught in the middle of a fire fight] What happened to us just providing tactical and logistical support? Drew: [Shannon is recruiting men] Count me in; I'll go. Shannon: Don't you want to know where and what? Drew: Doesn't matter. My wife's six months pregnant. Wherever we're going, it's gotta be better than sittin' around watchin' her get fat. Shannon: [about his mercenaries] Everybody comes with me, goes home. Endean: Shannon, get him out of here! This whole country's bought and paid for! Shannon: You're gonna have to buy it all over again. [shoots Col. Bobi]

- The song that plays over the end credits is the poem Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries by 'A.E. Housman' (qv), set to music.

- The "XM-18" grenade launcher used in the movie is a real life weapon. It is called the Manville Gun. It was named after its inventor, Charles Manville, who designed the gun in 1935.

- 'Tom Berenger' (qv) has said in interviews that around half of his role was omitted from the final release print.

- The toast given by the French member of the mercenary group is "Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire." ("Long live death, long live war, long live the cursed mercenary.") This is an adaptation of the original Foreign legion toast, "Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive la Légion Etrangère", which makes lot more sense!

- While researching the novel in the early 1970s, author 'Frederick Forsyth' (qv) pretended he was actually financing a coup d'etat in Equatorial Guinea. The pretense allowed Forsyth access to a number of underworld figures, including mercenaries and arms dealers. Forsyth has since commented that the arms dealers were the most frightening people he has ever met.

- First cinema film of 'David Schofield (I)' (qv).
